Winner is Crowned in Photography Competition

Layton, a lively Working Cocker Spaniel affectionately known as “Captain Chaos”, has been crowned Stirling’s top dog after being named the winner of a feel-good photography competition run by Thistles, shopping centre in Stirling, as part of its ongoing #ThistlesHelps campaign celebrating the local community.

The heart-warming competition, delivered in partnership with local Community Interest Company Paws for Progress, invited shoppers to submit a favourite photo of their dog alongside a short bio explaining how their four-legged friend has made a difference in their life.

Layton’s winning entry, submitted by his owner Skye, shared how he came into her life at just the right time, bringing renewed energy, comfort, and companionship. His big personality, affectionate nature, and boundless enthusiasm stood out among a host of uplifting entries.

The winner was chosen by young people supported by Paws for Progress at HMP & YOI Polmont, who reviewed the submissions and selected a shortlist of standout stories.

To help spread kindness during the colder, darker months, Thistles has now turned Layton’s winning entry into a postcard design, encouraging shoppers to share uplifting messages with someone they care about throughout December and January.

A shortlist of the fantastic entries are also now on display in Thistles’ community art gallery, giving visitors the chance to enjoy the inspiring photographs and stories shared by local dog lovers.

Gary Turnbull, Centre Director at Thistles, said: “Strike a Paws! has been a brilliant celebration of the joy and comfort dogs bring into our lives. The stories we received were incredibly moving, and Layton’s entry really captured the spirit of the competition. By turning the winning image into a postcard, we hope to encourage people to reach out and share a kind message with someone who might need it during the winter months.”

Dr Rebecca Leonardi, Founder and Development Manager at Paws for Progress, added: “It has been fantastic for the young people we support to be involved in judging this competition. Seeing the powerful bonds between people and their dogs reflects exactly what Paws for Progress is about. We’re proud to partner with Thistles on a project that spreads positivity, connection, and kindness across the community.”

Layton will also receive a pampering prize package, packed with treats and gifts to celebrate being crowned Stirling’s top dog.
